Low tide

10 AM, Memorial Day weekend. The tide was out- way out- and we were on the beach.

Usually, the waves come all the way up to this big rock.

To cross to the other side of the beach, you need to stumble through a a dark tunnel filled with logs and rocks. But that morning, crossing to the other side of the beach was as easy as walking around the point.

This was a special event- a perigean spring tide, something that only happens a few times a year. If the sun had been out, I think the beach would have been full of people celebrating the holiday weekend and low tide. Instead, it was just a few people and hundreds of starfish.

We were able to reach brand new areas, rocks and stretches of sand that had been covered in cold water just a few hours earlier. Little fish were temporarily stranded in some of the tide pools.

Someone made this sign out of driftwood... I read it as "munchies", hahaha :p What do you see?

Nothing really happened on this walk, but nothing needed to happen. It was a foggy, quiet morning. I carried tea in a red cup. My high school friend Sarah was with us, bundled up in a fleece and hat. Dogs ran around, barking at logs and tiny crabs. When the waves started to reclaim the beach, we retraced our steps back around the big rock.

This was a -1.7 low tide. In a few weeks, there will be a -2.0 low tide in Oregon... imagine!

Have you ever seen a very low tide?

  1. I think it looks kind of beautiful with the fog! I really need to get to the coasts.

    1. We went back for the next low tide... there was a totally different vibe that day- all sunny, blue skies, warm air.

Hope your summer is going well, Liz!
